All things being equal, which would you go with:

1. A 2002 Explorer 6 cyl. with 140K miles and no rebuilt tranny OR

2. A 2002 Explorer 6 cyl. with 166K miles, but a rebuilt tranny (at 137K) and new timing chain (at 162k).

Thanks for any light you can shed on this! Am in the hunt for a used 2002, and this is more or less the choice I'm facing.

2002 transmission failures

It seems to me that many 2002 Explorer members have reported early transmission failures. All transmission rebuilds may not be equal depending on the shop performing the work. We have a shop here in Greenville that provides a two year warranty as long as the transmission is serviced annually. Other shops provide only a 90 day warranty.

I would want to know what timing chain components were replaced and if the parts were OEM or aftermarket purchased on ebay.

Why is the vehicle being sold? There usually is a good reason.

Thanks for the info. I ended up going with the first option - no rebuilt transmission.
