So I just got my windshield replaced 2 weeks ago on my fiancee's 98 xlt, and finally got it inspected 2 days ago! Woohoo!
But I can't leave things well enough alone....
I realized recently that her auto-shutoff headlights timer wasn't working, they just stay on for a long time after I turn the car off, no matter where I set the slider. It just so happens that I have a doner '98 that I'm about to junk, but it has a perfectly good rear view mirror. So what am I gonna do? Same thing any self-respecting DIYer would do, I'm gonna switch the mirrors! So I go to the donor, un-clip the electricals and what-not, slide the mirror up on it's windshield mount, pops right off, voila! I go to the patient, un-clip the electricals and what-not, get a good grip on the mount and start to slide up just like before and...CRACK! The thing breaks right off the windshield taking a golf ball sized chunk of the glass with it....
I just dropped it at the after-hours lot at the glass shop. Time to drink.
