Looks like the tip just missed the retainer once the 'stat closed, from the spring compressing so much when it was open that the tip came out.

Probably a weaker spring than was needed, might just be a cheap unit, or just wasn't enough to hold up to the pressures in the system.

I use Motorcraft 190 degree 'stats and have never had a quality problem (except they seem to get stuck open or closed after a few years), though at $20+ bucks a pop, I'd probably suggest springing for the Stant 195 degree 'stats. You can get them at most parts stores, and they even offer a 'stat with a lifetime warranty. Hard to beat that.

I have seen that before. With alot of units made in Taiwan and China of inferior steel products, that is more and more common these days.

I have always put Robertshaw units in my builds....

NEVER had a problem.

.... Yeah I think the remark of cheap unit applies here ...It was made in Israel by "cst". It's a 198 f ...good thing I decided to replace it for a summer stat ( 180 f ) and this one is a stant brand so hopefully it will work correctly.

...sorry i must have deleted the pic from my photobucket acct ( no more pic )

but all it was was a "cst" brand stat that poped out of it's guide ...still want to know how that happened while it was installed :shifty_ey
