hey guys i was out this past weekend and my ex keeps overheating. one of the guys i met out there told me to take my thermostat out and just let the coolant circulate freely. can this be done without messing something up? if so how else can i keep my ex cool?

With no thermostat, you vehicle will more than likely continue to over heat. Its purpose is not only to regulate the coolant temp, but to restrict the flow of coolant to allow enough time to transfer the heat from the engine into the coolant.

It would be best to determine why its over heating in the first place and fix that/those issue(s) first. Such as:
  • Is the thermostat functioning properly?
  • Is the fan clutch engaging the fan at its designed temp?
  • Does the radiator have any blocked coolant passages?
  • Is the radiator packed with dirt or other debris to impede the flow of air?

Radiator thickness?

No thermostat equals slow warmup and poor performance and gas mileage. Has it always overheated or is this a new thing? If a new thing, either your driving habits have changed or something is wrong. When I bought my Sport in May it had a 1 inch thick (single row) radiator that I promptly replaced with a 2 inch thick (double row). After a 100,000 miles or so the fan viscous clutch friction weakens and cooling is lost at low speeds. Find out what's broken and fix it - don't make it worse by removing the thermostat!

nah its done this ever since i got it. i've replaced the radiator, thermostat, hoses, and water pump and it still over heats. what do yall think about an electric fan.

i hate to say it but ...you got a 91'....the heads on those years are known to go bad ...not saying thats you problem per-say but i've seen pics of your year model and right on the back water jacket ( back on the engine, pass side)
i 've seen rust build up so much that it looked like a rust colored mud ball and blocking about 75% of the flow of coolant from the back water jacket to the intake to the front water jacket.

with that being said...you may want to think of removeing your either your heads ( have them redone with later model castings...but yes lots of money here)

or...

take off the upper / lower intake system and see if you can't find any rust blocking any water jacket ports ( little less money wise but still a little labor intensive and somewhat cost wise ) .

you could try a electric fan .....i dought a newer more powerfull fan is going to help ..it may but there's a reason for the extra need in cooling so something else is up even after you replaced certain items with new parts .;)

btw: " where's loganville ? " lol .... oh wait thats a chevy commercial .....

dude thats old school maxi price
but ya i plan on taking the heads off and getting them ported and all so ill see what i find. i just put another radiator in it a few minutes ago cause the other one started leaking. thank God for warranties :).

yep they are sure nice when needed ,the heads....
( this is IF you got to replace your heads because they found cracks)

when i was getting mine running after i bought it in Lawrenceville... i was thinking at the time of replaceing the heads with newer updated castings from "idealcylinder head .com" i tried the link but i think there server is down but heres the phone # (510) 259-1122

and the link to the site : http://www.idealcylinderhead.com/ford-cylinder-heads/idl205-ford-cylinder-head.html

last i looked they were selling new castings ( 94 or 95tm) fora pair for about 2-$300 fully assembled with new valves,seats,springs,etc...

and yeah maxi price chevy ......thought of that when i saw loganville,i guess that will be stuck in my head for forever lol.

yep ill probably just take my heads to the napa machine shop over in monroe and have them checked but i gotta wait until next thursday. pay day:D

if the thermostat is functioning and not the bottle neck, then removing it won't prevent you from overheating.

run some detergents through your coolant system and flush the sucker out.

well i took the thermostat out and its running great now :)!! it doesn't overheat at all anymore!!!

probably not. maybe a better one just in the winter!

What size tires and gears do you have-- a buddy of mine had his overheating becase he had 33's, and no overdrive, and 3.73's running down the road at around 3,000 rpm.

That's what i got!! I'm running 33s with stock gears but its not really on the road that it overheated it was mostly on the trail to the point where the trans fluid would boil and the radiator cap would blow off but it has stopped since i took the thermostat out.

my hanes book says it leaves the pcm in open loop? or something. either way it seems its not a good idea. i just swapped mine out with a fail safe. but now i need to burp my system though

idk mine has been out for a while and i haven't had any problems so far!!

Redneck, easiest way to get a firm decision on this is get a new thermostat (180degree) and install. See what happens with a new thermostat in place. If you begin to overheat again, then somewhere in your cooling system there is a serious restriction (head more than likely as stated before)

Taking it out seems like it would have it's fair share of ups and downs...and maybe thy just level out haha
