91 Explorer 4l. I have a aftermarket stat made by Gates but there is no bleeder hole. Should I get the OEM stat with the bleeder hole or is the aftermarket OK without the hole? Any help would be appreciated. Also does it matter as far as the oriantation of the stat as I know the hole normally goes at the 12 o'clock position.

Get one with the bleeder valve.

2x and get a fail safe one like the Motorad. When they fail, they fail in the open position. Definately good thing to have in case the truck overheats

It might. Look at another thermostat, and try to match them as much as possible.

Well, unless getting the correct part is a major issue where you live, I would definitely not attempt this. The cost of a t-stat is very low, not sure why you wouldn't just want to get the right one.

I agree with Mikeinri. T-stats are cheap and getting the right one is insurance. Some have the little 'key's inside the whole to prevent clogging. Be sure to check the temp. also. I think 190-95 degrees is preferred not 180 as you might find out there too.

That little thingy is a check valve, that only allow one way flow. Get the correct part.

I wouldn't recommend doing any drilling, just buy a new t stat.

It's fine. Just replaced the stat yesterday in mine. The lower cost stat I put in last week had the jiggle valve and it would make the temp gauge swing far into the "hot" range before the stat would open. The valve didn't clear the water neck well when I put it in. Yes I bled all air out of the system through the temp sender hole.

I got the "premium" stat and it didn't have the valve. A 1/16-1/8" hole is plenty. Put it at 12 o clock. Drilling the small hole is a very common trick to allow air to bleed out and it also reduces temp surges in the system. The truck now warms up properly and the temp gauge doesn't swing anymore...

Get the better stat.

I would not mind drilling a hole, if I had to......thinking, about all of the old ones I've removed, "Where did that little jiggle valve disappear to?"
