The push button 4x4 doesn't do anything on my 02 Explorer. After seeing some other threads here I decided to try getting a 4x4CM from a wrecked 02 at the junk yard. Well I went to plug it in and fzzzzzzz POP! it (the replacement 4x4CM) started smoking! I immediately disconnected it and pluged mine back in then started it to make sure nothing else got fried. UGH! Was I supposed to disconnect the battery before doing something like that? Or maybe something else is shorting whcih fried my first one??? Any thoughts?

Whenever I fiddle with anything electrical, I always make sure to check all my fuses/relays first, then disconnect my battery before I unplug anything. I'd backtrack and start there.

Good advice, I'll start looking. Bummer that I may have fried that other unit though. Thanks!!

The 4x4 Control Modules are specific to the vehicle. There are several different ones and you must have the correct one for your vehicle. Check the part numbers on your original module and only use a 2nd hand one with the same numbers.

Ask me how I know this? :D
