So, I was driving to the other side of the island today, which requires going over the mountains. Which requires driving up a long, steep, road. I started smelling something funny, but dismissed it as another car, as all my guages (for all the good they do, anyway) were normal. that is, until smoke started coming out the back and in the vents. Guages still normal. I pull over, turn it off, and pop the hood. Everything looks normal. Check the oil, all looks normal. For the hell of it, pulled the trans dipstick...is my trans fluid supposed to be grey and smelly? I drove it around the rest of the day, and all seemed normal, but I have a feeling the trans is finally on it's last leg...

Grey tranny fluid not a good thing. :nono:

I agree with you I think it is time to wave bye bye to that tranny.

ewww..... time for progressive pan drops and fresh tranny fluid and a new filter, or 2 along the way. Please do it. You MAY yet save your tranny. Or extend its life.

I counted mine out 2 years ago at about 200,000 mi.... repeated fluid changs has got it to 225,000.

I think I may have it flushed for now, and hope i don't dislodge whatever is holding it together...I'm shopping around for a new Ex anyway, because mine has an incurable case of roof cancer. There's a guy at work who's been talking about getting rid of his, so I'm trying to talk him out of it. 5 speed, man xfer, man hubs...it's like the Holy Grail of 1st Gens...
