Hi all .I am thinking of adding a pusher fan to my x. this thing runs great at 197,359 miles. I have replaced the trany three times two under a rebuild warranty and then two years later a good rebuild as the fist only replaced the soft parts gggrrrrr.
Any hoot it is now running some what hot at ideal or stop and go traffic.
I have replaced the radiator, water pump, fan clutch, belt, and hoses. Some years back I had replaced the fan (it had cracked and broke a blade off) with a junk yard one before I knew much a bout the x's. I believe the one I put on it was the non air one. well now years later the heating up is getting to much so I replaced the parts above (they all needed it by the way) but it is still running hot at ideal and stop and go but get up to speed with the air temp about 100 plus and it runs with it pointing to the n or o of normal with the air running on max.. The only thing left my gray matter can come up with is to bust the slow speed air flow. Has any one done this and if so what did you use and were did you mount it .I believe the only room to mount an e fan is in a push set up. What ya all think?

Welcome to the forum!

Do a search, overheating is a common issue, and there are several potential fixes.

One easy thing to check is the front of the A/C condensor. If the tranny cooler rubber lines are leaking, the ATF will mix with road grime and block the air flow through the condensor and thus radiator. If this happens, remove the grille and tranny cooler to clean the condensor fins, and replace the rubber lines and clamps.

Other ideas are the fan and fan clutch. If you have an auto tranny and A/C, get the heavy duty models, only buy these parts from Ford.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I don't think a pusher fan is the answer.

What is the actual water temp?

Have you added an extra tranny cooler?

Good luck ....

thanks and some more info

I checked cleaned and fixed the air condenser in front of the trany and cleaned any junk between it and the trany cooler. I also have not added an extra trany cooler as I think the one in the radiator and the one out front would be more then enof.
I do not know the actual temps only were it used to ride even towing a 16' fiberglass 100 horse out board fish ski boat about 4 years ago same area and same kind of heat and even then it only went to the m if I pushed it hard going up a steep hill and I do mean steep ( 2 miles and 3,000 feet climb in 100 deg heat at 50 miles an hour with ac running full out but that was the one and only time it went that high tell as I said the last few years . I did not change the stat but that is going to be done in the next day or two I can only work on it a few hours in the am or at night to darn hot other wise here running about 107 and up. Here in Calif. right now.
what I did notice was if I slow down kind of fast for a stop light or such the temp takes a jump up and will hold it tell I get rolling again and after about a 1/2 to one mile go's right back down to comfy for me .
I was thinking thermostat but never had one act like this before also was wondering about the fan blades them self as I know there from a non ac x so I am replacing that also
the part have done so far did not come from Ford but all are heavy duty not just them saying it but by size and build so please any info would help as I said my gray matter just runs up against a brick wall on this and well doing all this on a SSDI income sucks but I have no chouse right now as it is my only transportation and no busses were I live plus I can not afford to replace it and almost can not afford to fix it any more ether so cheap help is always welcomed
I did find using the back plat of a computers tower the covers the pci slots works great for fixing the cooling fins on both the radiator and ac have

I need help too

I have a 93 X runs very hot and yet I have no heat. Have changed radiator & cap & therm also a new heater core. Any other suggestions.
Thanx:

I own a '93 xlt with 302K miles, and just this week replaced for the first time the fan clutch, fan (cracked to the hub between each blade all the way around), thermostat, and top rad. hose (because it was a maypop). I was also having the problem of over heating in stop/go traffic. Once on the highway you could watch the temp. drop to normal. Slow down again, and it would shoot right back up, especially if I was pulling my 5X8 work trailer, and forget trying to run the A/C!! It seems alot better. Make sure you use the correct temp. thermoststat. Also like Mikeinri says, my tranny cooler lines were replaced because of leaking. It really has'nt been hot here in Raleigh, NC in the past couple of days, so I'll try to let you know how it goes after this weekends 90 degree weather. Good luck!

Thanks for the info

guess fan is next. mine is also cracked between blades. The temp goes way up past the normal to the H after 5 min of driving rarely goes down and you can hear it boiling inside.Hopefull that will work. 302K I thought mine was ready for the junk pile with 180 (lol) Well good luck and will keep you posted.

Hey greenguy: Welcome to the forum! Regarding running hot but getting no heat, assuming the new heater core is good and installed correctly, you may have a blockage in one of the heater hoses (somewhat unlikely), check to see if they feel hot.

Also, I don't know if this applies to 93s, but 94s also have a bypass valve about 6 inches in front of the firewall on the passenger side. The heater hoses run through this between the engine and the firewall (thus heater core). There is a vacuum control line attached. This bypass valve could be bad, or you may have a vacuum leak in the control line, or something may have detached between the dash control and whatever actuates the vacuum to open that valve when you turn the heat on.

BTW, fixing this valve will help your heat work, but not the engine running hot. If I were you, at this point, I'd take it to a radiator shop and have them do a diagnostic. It's possible that you have a cracked head. Are you mysteriously losing any coolant over time?

Waterrider, welcome to you as well! Man, you have balls of steel. Replaced just the TOP hose?

Mike

thanx mike

i was loosing coolant but it was pouring out the overflow. since we changed the rad cap it does not do that. several people have said the head but there are no signs of leaks and truck runs great except for running really hot.

Well Mine is back to the way is should have been. New radiator, water pump, fan (yes cracked also) new thermostat, new cap, now the lower hose is leaking I knew I should have replaced all the houses when I did the work but no I had to pinch pennies. any hoot the thermostat was the last fix it was working but slow and not fully opening now it is great back to the o only for the most part dose go to the r but only a short time then drops back down when the thermostat opens . The ex has anew two row radiator with heavy cooling (same it came with) and now a new 11 blade fan ( better then stock) to boot . Trip to Idaho (1500 mile round trip) every thing ran great up hill pushing it stayed at the o and r. down hill it would drop off the n on the cold side like when it was new. Hope this helps some one out now to lift it and get some good meats under her after all at 200,000 I believe she is ready for a new look some thing other then stock LOL.

Huntman- Glad to know the EX is cooling like she should. I too have a cool running EX. After driving this weekend I did not see any temp. spikes. I know for a fact my clutch was'nt working, bacause now when my truck is running you can hear the fan blowing air big time! Hope it don't slow me down too much!!
Mike- You are right my friend. Why replace only one hose? I believed the lower hose was alright knowing it has'nt been on very long, and after careful inspection of course! I think there was a defect in the top hose. It was very squishy, and would swell up when the engine was warm.
I could be setting myself up for a break down, but I'll keep an eye on it for sure.
Steve
