Well, I found an offer I that's hard to refuse on a 2000 F-250 with the 7.3 turbo. I know that there are others on the forum with these, so is there anything I should look for when I go look at this this weekend?

Specs
Ford F-250 Lariat 4WD
Extended Cab
7.3 turbo Diesel
Automatic
84K miles
Power everything

Buy it. 84k is amazing.

There is a sensor in these things that go out and leads to a no-start situation. A lot of guys just carry a spare sensor. I'll try and find more info. They talk about it quite a bit on pbb.

I think tdavis' is right around this year. He'll have all kinds of info on it if he sees this before his vacation.

I've had a few 7.3s, the motor will hold up strong. Tranny's are suspect for trouble on these trucks. Biggest mistake I ever made was running it a little low on oil wich may have been the reason for a injector to go bad, but I also had to replace a part of that wiring harness that could have caused failure.

Diesel trucks rule. Towin power is riduclous. Any guy who drives a gas truck that says it pulls like nothing is back there has never driven a diesel.

Only other issue I ever had with my older 250s, Excursions was the door lock actuators. They begin to fail on almost every 99-01 (I think that's 4 trucks) I have owned.

TDavis and 90Ranajo both are experts on these trucks with the 7.3 (and we've got a "social group" on the forum so buy it and join up)

Buy it.

There is a recall for the crank position sensor..

Be prepared to replace/rebuild the transmission at some point (esp. if it was used for towing).

Does it have 265 sized tires on it? If so, it probably has the heavy duty suspension on it - which makes it a F-350 with F-250 badges.

I'd buy a 7.3 before I buy any 6.0 or 6.4 diesel from Ford..

That the conclusion I went to after doing some research.

How difficult is it to swap a manual into these if/when the auto goes? Is there anyway to keep the cruise control if that is done?

I don't know.. The 6speed hand shaker is a very expensive transmission - more than the automatics.

My truck (a 6 speed hand shaker) has the 275hp engine, not the wimpy 245hp automatic engine. :D

Here is an auction report of recent sales of this exact truck at auction in the past few weeks.

This is for a 2000 F250 ext cab 4x4 lariat.

Nothing comes close to that mileage.

Not sure what you are paying, typically cars in this dollar value have a 20-30% over auction price on the street but I have found many deals for "auction price" from private partys.

Buy it and join the group! The trans is probably the 4R100 (an updated E4OD) which is pretty good.

When the tranny goes, go get either a John Woods (of El Central, CA) or a BTS (Tennesse). It'll set you back about $4000, but well worth it and way cheaper than a ZF swap.
The 1999.5-2000 are the best 7.3Ls due to them having forged rods versus the 2001-2003 that have the powdered metal rods.
The CPS is a high fail item, but as Tom said there is a recal for them out now. And Ford sells them for about $20 now. Although personaly I'd spend the $50 for the International CPS, much better quality in my opinion.

Only other issue I ever had with my older 250s, Excursions was the door lock actuators. They begin to fail on almost every 99-01 (I think that's 4 trucks) I have owned.

Oh yea, the passenger side lock failed on mine.. DWD was here, said 'WHAT? it takes 20 minutes to replace!' so I went and got the part (like $30 from the dealer).. and 20 minutes later, it was fixed.

The new lock motor is a different design than the old one.

If possible, have an OASIS report ran to see what troubles it had under warranty.

If you PM me the VIN, I know some guys that can run an OASIS report for you.

i love turbo diesels and that is one nice truck and did u buy it

No, I didn't buy it. It is owned by a guy in the service who is currently stationed in WY. I was way to busy with work at the time to travel out to see it. I prefer to test drive vehicles before I drive them, even though it appeared to be in great shape. So, I'm still looking for

F-250 or 350 with 7.3
Crew cab or Extended
Manual Tranny
Less than 160k

Anyone know of any big differences between the 5 speed and 6 speed manual trannys for these trucks?
