Thinking of buying new speakers...

I know many of you guys have thousands invested in your systems, so this thread will probably be of little interest to you. I have a blown factory speaker, so I'm just looking for some decent replacements. I would prefer to stay under $100 for all four speakers. I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to the different types of speakers. I've heard different terms like components, 2-way, 3-way, etc. The speakers I'm considering right now are Sony XS-R5743 4-ways. For less than $80, I can replace all four factory speakers, but is there anything I need to take into consideration or is it just going to be as simple as buying and installing them with no surprises? Keep in mind that I'm not looking for audiophile quality, extreme bass, etc. I basically just need to get rid of the annoying buzz from the blown speaker, so I thought I might be able to get a little better clarity with some aftermarket units.

If you are going to go through the trouble of replacing the speakers, crutchfield will give you the wireing adapters to hook them up for free and they are giving free shipping right now.. they have a wide range of good speakers starting at about $50 a set I think.. I beleive in why do it twice if you can do it better the first time right lol..

Do some research on crutchfield.com as to what speakers fit your car and you can ask them for a recommendation. You can then try to find the speakers elsewhere for less because crutchfield is rarely the cheapest. I opted for wallyworld speakers when I replaced mine and they cost $60 a pair. They sound okay but the highs are pretty thin. For a few dollars more you could probable get much better sound.

The newer Pioneer TS-A6872R 6x8 3-ways sound very good for the $$. Around $100 for all 4.

A better way to go is a component system speaker set up with a mid/bass & tweeter. The adapter plates can be had for less than $10/pair. These will fit directly in your 6x8 enclosure after the component speakers are mounted.
For a HQ set of speakers plan on shelling out a few hundred $$ for all 4.

Guys, I appreciate the insight, but when I'm not listening to my exhaust, I'm just listening to talk radio. I just wanted to make sure there aren't any other variables that I need to take into consideration when replacing the speakers. I did use the tool on Crutchfield, but the 6x8 thing threw me off because I couldn't find anything in that size. Then I ran across an artical saying that 5x7s ARE 6x8s. Is that right? If so, then I would like to slap the system in the face with a glove. That's just confusing.

Yes its true 6x8 =5x7

keep in mind you get what you pay for. for under 100 for 2 pairs you are gettign a really really cheap speaker. I hope you plan on doing the installation. that will cost anywhere from 50 to 75 per set depending on the shop.

The installation will be no problem. I've done many of them in the past on my other vehicles. I just wanted to make sure I am getting the right size speakers for the Explorer and that the factory speakers don't have some kind of special connector. The last thing I want to do is remove the door panel only to find that the new speakers aren't plug and play and that I don't have the appropriate connectors in my toolbox.

Your going to have to clip the factory connectors regardless of the speaker you get. The new set will come with wires and connectors to the speaker, but just a raw end on the opposite side.
