I was at a friends house this weekend watching him put a turbo on his 3.8 mustang and saw he had his rear diff out with all the brake hardware off as well. He told me he was upgrading his breaks and immediately i asked what he was doing with his old backing plates and calipers. Theyre in the back seat of my 93 right now. I did some searching and see that everyone who swaps out for rear discs usually just gets a rear end off of a 2nd gen. While that is an option for me since i priced a complete rear end for $250 I was wondering if I could make due with the mustang parts i got for free. Any feedback is appreciated.

The axle flanges are different. Explorers use the large axle bearing, Mustangs use the small bearing. The backing plate will not bolt up to the Explorer without serious modifications that could quite possibly alter the strength of the components.

The Explorer rear disc set-up is nearly perfect. It's a disc/drum hybrid set-up that has proven to be reliable since the 60's.

yeah a friend of mine and i got to thinking about this at lunch the other day. hmm. if i want rear discs later i can always get a complete rear axle from a 2nd gen. would be tons easier.
