I am a diehard BFG Mudder fan but thereis something about those Thornbirds that I like. Any of you guys running them? How are they on the street compared to the M/Ts? Do they last long? How about cold morning thumping. I hear bias plys do that alot

i had the 31 11.50 on my explorer and they lasted about 5000 miles before one blew out the side wall at 60 mph hmmm firestone? no they suck very loud very rough and the bfgs will due a hell of alot better on and off road stick with the bfs
just my 2cents

I am running 33x1250x15 Thornbirds on my rig with no problems. They take a beating and look mean as hell. I haven't noticed any thump so I guess that it is not that major. They have not gotten me stuck yet, and have worn alot longer that the Mickey Thompson Baja Belted Radials. They have a nice hum at freeway speeds. I would buy them again.

Get some boggers, they will do a lot better offroad and sound awsome.

I diffently agree with OKNUT!!!! I had the 33x14 boggers on my rig before I went to the 36 TSL's. My friend has the thornbirds on his rig and the only comment he has to say about them is "ok for the price, I guess"

Your right studdedx, The thornbirds are only for looks. The only thing they are good for off road is ruts, because of the thread on the sidewalls. The Bogger looks a lot better and performs like a champ.

Studdedx, you should have gotten the new bogger, it's a 37" by 13". I was thinking about getting that tire till I got a little to big.

Take care guys

Oknut, when did they come out with that size and where do I go to get my new tires?

I heard about them a few months ago.. I think you could get em at any tire store, Go to Les schwab and and ask.

Here we go again...

I like my Thornbirds they have not let me down yet.

Which is better

STUDDEX; between the Bogger and TSL, which is the better all-a-round tire? They're both Great tires (except on the street). I'm looking at both as a set of Off Road tires.

Rocky -

My take on the difference between boggers and TSL's is that the boggers can't be beat for straight line traction in the mud, but the TSL's should provide better lateral stability, since they use offset lug spacing. The bogger's tread is completely horizontal. But all of this is probably at the esoteric level. For most situations, either would be fine, and I'd get the one that you simply like the best. The boggers are the loudest, but they do look knarly!

I use the SSR's, which I think are a great balance for on and off road, plus they look pretty cool too. I like running a radial on the street, and their center lugs are siped, which does give you great wet traction on the street, and better grip on the rocks.

I think the Thornbirds look cool, and I know a few people that really like theirs. It all comes down to what you prefer.

ROCKY; Dogman has a few good points in there but if you're going for an "all-around tire" I would choose the TSL's or even the TSL radials. I've ran both on my rig and not one single complaint from me. If you go to the before and after forum and find my truck I think you can find a good picture of my truck with the TSL radials on. Go with the boggers if your serious about playing in the rocks or mud. I even had pretty good luck playin in the snow with boggers. Thats my personal thought on tires.

I'd just like to say, I'm runnin 33in boggers and love em....I even run em on the street and they are incredible in the snow....slush, powder, packed....etc They're awesome...I've never gotten stuck in them while wheelin...

TSL or Bogger?

Thanks Guys for the input;
I'm purchasing for Off Road only and I like the Boggers, but the TSL's are a little cheaper and come in more sizes. I'm leaning towards the 38.5x11 Boggers (tall-n-skinny) and I think they might possibly fit with some help. HA! I also like the 38x12.5s but need a little more room. AAAAND, they now offer TSL 37x12.5 ARGH-ARGH! Decissions-Decissions!

How are you gonna be able to fit 38 inch tires with only 5.5 inches of lift ?

Because I have a 16" lift and i'm only going with 39.5's..

Ya got the same question as OKnut!! I've got the 5.5" lift with a 3" body lift and I can barely fit the 36x12.50's.

Sawzall will carry!

No really; I also have a 2" B/L and have trimmed approx. 3" at the rear of the front wheel wells (and plastic liner). The BushWhacker flares cover up the area of the trimming nicely. Also, going to an 8" rim made a big difference with tire contact during turns. I haven't had to trim the rear yet but may have to with the bigger wheels. I did have contact at the sway bars but I have welded steering stops in to prevent contact on sharp turns. I deffinately believe in buying the tires you want and then making them fit. How big can I go before I need heavier axles????HMMM

I've heard that pretty much at 36's ya need to go bigger...obviously Oknut's 44's took a slightly heavier axles :)
Pete

I'm not going with 44's afterall. I have lowered my truck 3 inches and moved the front axle forward 2 inches. And i'm planning on running 39.5's..

As for when to change the axle, it all depends on how much power you have to turn the tires. I have seen people break front and rear ends with 36" tires. My buddy just broke his rear dana 60. Snapped the axle in half, but he is also running 44" boggers with a fresh engine. If your a good driver and don't hit the gas when in a bind. You should be fine. But if you wanna do heavy mudding like me you should consider going with a stronger axle.

Your lucky that you can trim your rear fenders. Being a four door it gets a little harder.

Oknut
