Skip to 17:20 if you want to see them in action and don't want to watch the install vid. I drive on steep gravel roads sometimes, it is almost as good as 4x4. Should last forever in something like an Explorer with less power. What is in the vid is exactly the same procedure for an ex, except for the brakes maybe.

If you have a limited slip diff, wouldn't you get about the same effect by reducing the amount of friction modifier added, or tame down carbon fiber by adding more of it?

The modifier reduces noise and chatter. But your on to something about the carbon fiber. I wonder exactly why ford went to cf clutches. I can bet, its prob for longevity and wear resistance, not to make it slip less.

These discs need the Ford modifier. I tried using the valvoline 75w-140 with the modifier and it rubbed on turns. I don't think you can add too much of the modifier. What it does is create a film on the discs(so they don't bind at small differences in speed), and once a threshold is reached it just wipes off. That is what the Ford tech who was by the parts counter told me.That is up for debate though.

He said next time only use plain, straight 75w-140 (he said Ford or Walmart/Supertech brand is fine) and the bottle of modifier. All rear ends were backspeced to that by Ford, especially heavier trucks.

That is the only product the dealership uses to service 8.8" rear ends.

I'm putting in th CF clutches next, and debating whether or not to flip the discs and keep one old pair of frictions in it. I think if the old ones look rough, I'll run it normally with just three per side. I need maximum grip and I use Amsoil Severe Gear, it's the best(and only $13 a quart +S&T).
