My throttle cable is FUBAR. It had been sticking lately and I couldn't figure out why. Well tonight I found the problem. Where the cable enters the firewall from the engine compartment the cable casing has been rusted through to nothing! Now, rust may be no big deal to most of you, but I live in AZ and nothing rusts here:D Water must get trapped under the thick rubber shield that shrouds the lower half of the cable. If it happened here it can happen anywhere, I would check it out to be safe.

Anyway, my question is how do you release the cable from the firewall. I have to remove my front seat in order to see under the dash since my roll cage is in the way. I just want to know what I have to look forward to.

If it happened here it can happen anywhere, I would check it out to be safe.

Throttle cable removal from my FSM-

-Remove cable from TB
-Remove cable from bracket on intake
-Remove throttle cable end from accelerator pedal
-Collapse clips at dash panel and push cable through panel into engine compartment

The clips you may be able to push in with your fingers, but a pair of channel locks or needle nose may be easier to "collapse the clips". You have to keep both clips collapsed while you push it through the firewall(dash panel) I havent done the Explorer, but it is similar to others I have worked on. The plastic clips are on each side of a square fitting that goes through the firewall.

Since you dont need to reuse the cable, you could just break off the tabs with a screw driver and pull the cable out, without trying to keep them clamped while you push out the cable.

Install is reverse(duh)

Good Luck

I'm all for breaking it:D Hell of a lot easier than trying to find the tabs under the dash.

Thanks, now I just have to find a cable. None of the local dealers have one in stock. Time to hit the boneyard tomorrow.

Does not sound like fun. Rick I heard you were not running the fiberglass front end anymore? What do you plan to build?

I bought a set of steel fenders and painted them to match. They give me more clearance between the body and the boulders and I can see around them better than with the flared fenders.

Cool. I see your point. That's quite a bumper! Looks mean.
