I have a 1994 Explorer with a worsening sound in what I think is the transmission. We have had the car since it was new and remember how it should sound, but now it thuds, lurches or pops into shifting gears. Especially, down shifting. Also, just putting it into drive from park can cause this sound and thud under foot. We have changed transmission fluids and serviced transmission often to no avail. The sound is not happening always.
We live in the mountains of Colorado and must take a series of hills from Denver to Bailey, a 50 mile drive and a 3,000 foot climb, 2-3 times a week.
We are at the last 2,000 miles of a 70,000 mile service contract with Ford. They have heard the sound but are saying this is normal. Under our contract with Ford if there is a problem, they must pay for it. Is Ford avoiding replacing our transission or repairing it? Is it another problem? Has this happened to other Explorers? All suggestions welcome.
