I just dropped the pan for a tranny fluid and filter change and out came two large metal pieces. Is this normal ? I suppose one could be a magnet but the other looks like it has rough edeges and may have broken off from somewhere. It did have a hard time switching from 1st to 2nd in overdrive. Right now I'm in pieces and I just want to know if I should put both pieces back in the pan or just the one that looks like a magnet. Thanks,

George

got a picture of the parts or can you get some.

Could be band pieces, or maybe the apply strut- the struts are cast with few machined edges. But just a guess without a better description, or a pic.

Any markings, numbers, stamps, etc?

If its a first time fluid change it could be the plug they use in the dipstick hole, but I think they are plastic.

Photos George sent

The pieces are parts of the band, and the band apply strut. I think intermediate, but hard to tell unless the pans off and you can see the apply lever bores.

Heres the shots Geoprge sent for anyone whos curious, or sees these in thier pan :(

I had that piece on the left in my pan after my intermediate band went. It looked a lot worse than that though. Oh, the joys of accelerating to 30 in first gear, letting off of the gas, tapping it again, and the accelerating to highway speeds in 4th gear. :p

I just had this exact thing happen to me, it cost my 1k to get the bands replaced.

That is one reason you should not buy relined bands! Count those little welds. So, you going to join the rebuild it yourself club? You can tear it down to the band, not go any further and just replace the band.

One Questions

I've located the parts and the manual and now I just have one question. Do I have to take out the transmission to replace the band or can I get to it without removing it. And is this something I can pull off on jack stands or do I need a hoist. I'm pretty sure we did a similiar job years ago with a buddy but that was a honda and probably a lot smaller.
