Thump feeling when stoping

if its a 98, it is definitly either your control arm bushings, more likely your slip yokes. get under neath and move them see if you hear a click back and forth.. you probably need a new drive shaft

HAD the exact problem you have, i thought it was my calipers loose, thats why it would do it when stopping, also thought it was them cuz when ever i hit a bump it would clunk so i thought the caliper was bouncing around, sure enough took everything apart the whole thing was tight, brought it to my mechanic and he diagnosedit in 45 minutes (put it on hoist, took it for a drive, and tdhen back on hoist) did all the u-joints and changed the front shaft (that sucker aint cheap by the way) also did both CV's as they had a little bit of play.

I have an 04 with this problem. Most times it would happen just as you stop, other times when you let off the brake to move again.
I thought for sure it was the slip yoke.

Brought it to the dealer today, thought this would be covered by my extended warranty, turns out there are 2 bushings missing from the rear end.

Like it had work done before, and they got left out. You can wiggle the drive shaft where it joins to the pinion in the rear end. Warranty wont cover it because they said it was a pre-existing condition.

$330 + tax :(

i have a 93 with this problem but mine does it after the car is off or in park and while its idling and sugestions

hmm...i had a thud feeling whenever i took my foot off the gas pedal and the momentum/RPM's came down...since i (mostly) solved my vacuum leak, it has dissapeared. Probably something to do with backpressure.

It's the slip-yoke on the driveshafts--lubricate them.

Ding-ding-ding-ding-ding!!! We have a winner!!!

The slip yoke end of the driveshaft binds-up. Drop the shaft, separate the slip yoke, and grease it up. That'll solve the issue for a while... it'll eventually come back.

Ive had the slip yolk looked at at the dealer. They lubed it, problem still existed.
They blambed it on a rear shock that appears to be leaking. I havent replaced it yet because the ride is perfect.

Personally I think its in the transmission. as sometimes it happens immediatly after a stop, sometimes just before you get to a complete stop and sometimes after you take your foot off the brake to proceed. (In my explorer anyway)
