Thump feeling when stoping

I have 98 sport SOHC automatic 53K.

When I come to stop there is thud feeling. Some time I'll feel a thud if I take my foot of the brake at stop lights and let the truck roll a couple of inches.

The dealer says there is nothing wrong. Any suggestions.

I had that problem once, it drove me nuts.. is it like a knocking on your floor board that you can feel?

I can't remember what the problem was, but my dealer did find it and manage to fix it

I have that problem to on my 93, except i have it in 2 spots. I feel the thud under my foot while i go over bumps, and like you said when you almost come to a stop and let go of the brake. Not sure what it is but it is something definately in the front end. Its drivin me nuts.

Oh my god, I have the same problem with my 95` Explorer, the identical problem!! I really, really, really want to know what it is!! Anybody have mechanical expertise that might be able to diagnose this problem?

Idea

I have the same problem in my 91 but only after I used it in 4wd, even a day after. When you hear this noise, is it frequently after 4wd or just always? If it is 4wd I think your hubs might be going, otherwise, I would check to see if your sway bar might be hitting your springs, that also caused a problem for me and would happen in the situations you guys are describing.

I had the same thumping when stopping or hitting the brakes. Turns out the dealer didn't tighten the spare tire hanger snuggly enough and it was swinging and banging.

ive got the same on my 93

mine i think is a bad shock it looks as if it is almost fully compressed whenever i hit a bump it make a thud on the drivers side front. i have pretty high milage rancho rs 5000s replacing them this weekend.

I don't beleive its the 4wd guys, mines 2wd.. and as far as the spare.. it was sittin tight in mine, god, I wish I could recall what they said it was.. I beleive it had something to do with the alignment of the front tires? this has been over a year, but thats all I've come up with.

Lubricate the slip yoke at the front of your rear driveshaft. There is another thread here somewhere regarding this problem. Ford lubricated mine on my '97 to get rid of the thump when stopping. Someone here did it themselves on their '98 to get rid of it. It took them 25 minutes to do.

I have this same problem on my '98 Sport w/ 40K miles.

I asked the dealer they said that the problem has been brought to their attention before and they could not find a problem. They said that they think the leaf springs were too soft.

Mine feels like it is comming from the rear.

I took off the sway-bar linkages. It still made the noise.

I took off the spare tire. It still made the noise.

I am hoping my Trailmaster 4" lift will finaly solve this very annoying "KLUNK"

Check your bushings. The shock-eyes, radius arm, and sway-bar bushings may be going bad. Mine has "clanked" for some time when the front suspension is being put to use. Does it make the sound when you go over a bump??? That's about the only time that mines does it.

Mine does it in four instances: (1)when I drop off a parking lot curb wit both rear tires at the same time. When one tire goes down first I do not get the noise. Thats what made me think it might be the anti-sway bar.
(2) Come to a slow stop and then let my foot off the brake slowly. This makes me think it has something to do wit the driveline.
(3) Come to a quick stop. I feels just like the spare tire is swinging. In this instance I might feel it a couple of times during one stop.
(4) Driving down a residental street 15-20 mph small bumps that make the explorer rock from front to back. I hear/feel the klunk when the momentum compresses the rear suspension.

I had the same clunk/thump/bump/noise intermittantly on my 93..then it got to be way more frequent....and when i took it in to get aligned the told me that my radius arm bushings were shot..sooo here is hopeing the James Duff 2.5 lift will fix it all...

My 94 4x4 also had (has) the clunk. I found out it is just a slight delay in the transmission downshifting into low after (or very near) a stop. It's annoying, and feels like the spare or something is sliding forward, etc. It is less noticable after a fluid flush, so I imagine it is just sticking a bit.

I also notice that, when towing in hot weather, that it sometimes DOES NOT quite make it back into low gear at a short stop, and it's a bit weak taking off (in second) with the heavy load. I pull it down manually and all is fine again.

I trust nothing a dealer tells me, but I have a very realiable tranny shop where they tell me it's not a major problem and to let it be if I can tolerate it. Keep the fluid fresh !!

It's the slip-yoke on the driveshafts--lubricate them.

I had the same problem for over a year before I finally figured it out. The Bushing for the left (front) Axel I-Bolt Bushing was worn. Replaced the bushing and wha la no more thump. Part was about $15 and took about 2 hours of my time.

I have the same problem arising lately. But I have also noticed that my hubs are hot even in being in 2wd. So that tells me it might be the wheel bearings. I am going to check them tonight. Does anyone else think this may be the reason. I think I will also lubricate the slip yoke on the driveshafts as well. BTW, what part is the slip yoke?

I replaced just about everything, wheel bearings, u-joints, greased front slip yoke/joint, radius arm bushings, tie rods you name it. Then I had friend try a stethoscope machine with several mounting points and a dial to check each mounting point seperatly while driving and wha la. We found that the front Left Axel Arm Bushing at the I-Bolt was worn. When I replaced that bushing the noise stopped and the vehicle even handle a little better when stopping. I would have never thought that was it but it worked. The part was only $15 and took about two hours to install. Good luck
