96 V8 Limited Thump on Acceleration

Not my X....worse...my mother in law's. SHe has a '96 Explorer Limited w/ V8 (that she says isn't 4WD, but I thought all V8 X's were full time 4WD?) Anyway, under anything more than easy acceleration, there is a repeated thump that increases with road speed. It sounds like it is coming from the drivers front and it actually sounds like it is something disengaging under too much torque and then re-engaging. CV, Ujoint, Transfercase or mount? according to what I have read, control trac wasn't introduced until '97.....or something else I may be missing? Help! I haven't crwaled under it yet, but we need to get her fixed and quickly, so she can get us the new tires for MY X (wedding present) Any help appreciated.
