We recently purchased this 2000 Ex XLS with a 4.0 OHV with a 144K on it. It had a check engine light on and throwing codes for o2's and evap. and there's been this noise that sounds like something is loose and hitting the floor (at least I can feel it in the floor).
The good news is that a fuel filter fixed the miss/rough idle issue and new fuel cap is on order.
However, this noise is a different story. It seems to happen whenever we hit a bump or crack in the road at pretty much any speed. The previous owner says that he was told it was shocks but I have a hard time believing that since they don't even attach to the body. I'm wondering if it has to do with the area where the torsion bars attach but I'm not that familiar with how they connect. A visual inspection doesn't reveal anything extraordinary underneath the truck. The steering feels nice and tight and I don't feel anything in the steering wheel such as when there's a loose or worn suspension part. The balljoints appear to be in good condition. I haven't had much luck in searching the forum but it's hard to search for a noise.
I don't know how common this is as I never experienced anything like this on our previous '00 Mounty. Any thoughts?
TIA!
