I was wondering how easy (or hard) it is to roll back the odometer on a 2k XLS. The reason I am asking is that the DMV has a higher registered odometer reading than what was reported when I bought the vehicle. As a result I still haven't got the title in my name. So I am wondering if it is so easy that an regular mechanic or seller could do it. The odometer does not have marks or scratches and the digits line up ok. (I did not do a carfax check before buying. (Stupid me.)

How far off is it? Maybe the odometer has rolled over since it was last checked by the DMV?

The DMV has 137.853 while the odmeter showed 108.873. So hopefully it hasn't rolled over.

It is not really the added miles that worry me. I would have bought the truck anyway because it felt and looked OK. However it makes you wonder what else the seller might have done. + I want the title in my name eventually.

It would have to be removed to roll it back, and cost quite a bit--
look on ebay for a high mileage cluster to install yourself. When you get your inspection finished, swap the original back in.

in ebay search, type "explorer cluster"

good luck

How long apart was their check it looks to me like someone fat fingered the three in there.

Before you get mad at the dealer. At some point in time the cluster could have gone bad and they replaced it. Possibly even before the dealer got it. I used to work at the Denver Auto Auction and I have seen alot of this. Pull a Car Fax and track it back to where the diff occoured. Also if the Car Fax comes back clean it is quite possible that the DMV made a typographical error. Research is key.

Oh. I don't think I was clear enough. I am suspecting the previous owner of rolling back the odometer. If, as you say, it would be a quite expensive job to do it probably wouldn't be worth it for him. I just want to find out if it has been tampered with, and if so, I will do all that I am required to get the paperwork in order. I will sell the car in July so I have to get things sorted out before that.

Yes, I haven't been confronting the seller (private party). I will not do anything like that without evidence. Hopefully. Someone at DMV made a typo and I have five months work to correct it:-(

Thanks for answers though!

I am not sure. They have not supplied me with any information. I have requested the documentation they base their conclusion on. Hopefully it's just a typo.

Did you run a carfax yet? At least if you do that it can give you an idea when it was done. You never know maybe it was done before the previous owner. He might not had any idea becasue he never ran a carfax.

good luck!
