"Thumping" noise

Hi, I'm a new member, and we've got 2 Explorers, an '02 XLT and a 98 Eddie Bauer. I've got a problem with the '02. We've got that thumping noise from the rear heat/A/C when either is on. I've heard something about a door back there that goes bad, but I haven't been able to track it down. Any suggestions?

Judging by your description, I'd say your blend door motor has stripped a few teeth off of it. Does it thump less or more when you go from full hot to full cold?

When you take it apart to replace it, check the door to make sure it is not broken first. Just use the shaft on the old motor and turn the door back and forth both ways untill you feel it hit its limit on both sides.

Thumping noise

Thanks will. Is the blend door on the drivers side rear? I;ve got a small access panel back there that I took off, but it didn;t look like I expected it to. Do I need to remove the entire trim panel?

It's been awhile since I had one apart and I can't get the Ford website to let me log in right now (Go Ford, lol)

I'm pretty sure its on the drivers side rear panel (Is that about where the sound is)

I'm also pretty sure you might have to at least pop the panel out some for access. I think theres been a few times on different vehicles that you don't have to remove them, but I seem to remember explorers had to come out. The motor assembly should be an off white plastic, somewhat square in shape, and held down be 3 8mm screws. If I'm off a little bit it's cause I'm not staring at one right now, lol.

Let me know if ya need any more help, or my info is off.

Welcome to this forum! It might have something to do either with the blower motor or the blend door. Sometimes the blower motor or the squirrel cage goes bad. I've merged 2 similar threads together.

blend door

teal94gt50,
it thumps less when I turn it to full cold. Can you tell me the location? The noise comes from center of dash. have look under on both sides. found vacuum motors for selector switch but can not find and thing for temp. control. Any suggestions of what needs to be removed to access it, ie center console, dash . Thank you

I've never heard the noise from the dash that you describe. I'm at a loss to help you on that one. Good Luck

lfahey.. what year explorer?

Your's sounds like a blend door motor concern too. The front and rear ac use a very similiar motor setup, both prone to breaking the small plastic gears inside.

It sounds like yours has just broken different teeth than TOMANDPAT so you're having the noise in a different temp setting.

If your explorer is the newer body (01) The motor is not that fun to do. It is to the right of your gas pedal, behind the panel and up some. Removing the center radio/temp controls will help you see a little better. Getting the bolts is a combo of wobbly socket and a longer extension, I believe there's a write-up on here somewhere.

Have a good evening!!
Will
