Just got my 2006 explorer with 120xxx miles. When it starts I get a ticking for the first 30 seconds in either the engine or the manifold. It was just serviced in November. I've read that it could just be a leaking gasket in the manifold or something more serious. Any ideas what could be going on?

If it is v8, then it's probably exhaust manifolds, not just gaskets. Very common on fords 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 v10.
Not a pretty job.

If its a V6 you might as well go ahead and start checking wreckers for low KM engines unless you are good with a wrench. Timing chain tensioners, have a look for death rattle.

I have had that noise since I bought mine 3 years ago. This summer, before the warrant expired, I had the manifolds and broken studs replaced. Didn't change a thing.

I've read that there is a TSB on this problem. Lash adjusters?

I had a 2004 v8 that ticked on most cold starts. It went away when warm. Mine had 150,000 when it started. I never addressed it - drove another 50,000 and sold the truck for other needs. Never really caused an issue - just the ticking.
