My explorer (94 with ~100kMiles) started to do a ticking noise between 2000 and 3000 revs when the engine is warm. I first thought it was pinging , cleaned the MAF and some more stuff, it still did it. Then I thought that it may be a lifter but from what I see on the posted messages the lifters seem to be noisy more when the car is cold (not for me). Then I went to a mechanic that told me that this noise comes from the main crankshaft (or rod) bearings which are worn. I was puzzled because I have experienced the noise of a worn bearing on a rod and the noise was like a machine gun and the oil pressure was roughly nil. After that I have driven the car for another 3000 miles and the noise is not changing in severity or pattern. I cannot believe that it is a bearing because I would have thought it should have failed by now completely.
Any idea on what I should try next?
