Greetings all , first time poster long time reader :wavey:
Great site btw .. has realy gotten me out of a few jams

Im having somthing of a sizing issue with my xlt's d30 swap .

This is my buggy , a 91 XLT .....
Custom Lift , 4:56's turning 35" MT's .

A 95 cherokee D30 SAS ....

The swap and lift where done by previous owner ...
previous owner says axle is from a 95 cherokee , the numbers confirm this .

My issue is this , after having a driver side outer tie rod end crap out on me , I went to my local parts supplier and bought a new end for a 95 cherokee . It was to small . i returned it and brought the old one with me .

He said the part he gave me was correct for a 95 cherokee and says there is no tie rod end difference in submodel cherokee's . I asked if he would be able to check a few and size'm up for me , he says he has over a thousand and that was not possible ...:nono:

so now , i cant ask for a 91 XLT tie rod end , and it appears that this isnt a "95 cherokee" tie rod end .. so im kinda in a pickle now

Here's a pic of the bad rod end i pulled ...

The threaded end is much bigger than the 95 cherokee end they sold me .

Seems like the exact diameter of a penny ...
wherin the 95 cherokee threaded end was more like that of a dime ..

Im supposing that the origin of the axle doesnt suggest the steering components are from the same ?

Can anyone , help me get an idea of what i should be asking for ?

Heres an older pic of the knuckle i took during a gear change , if that helps any ..

I appreciate any ideas or feedback .

Thanks Guys .
Dave

Why can't you ask for a 91 Explorer Tie Rod? IMO that looks like a factory tie rod and adjusting sleeve. I would try the Explorer before i try crossing more parts. I need to replace both my tie rods too but i have a factory truck so there ya go.... (mostly). If I pull the tie rods out before any other comments i'll compare it to the penny like you did and snap a shot or two.

yes ... why indeed .

well thats the thing , I had become so acustomed to ordering cherokee parts for the front end , brakes , roters , berrings ect ... that i unassumingly answer "95 cherokee" whenever i buy a front end part .

when i noticed the cherokee part was way to small , it hit me ... these are stock steering components . I returned to the parts supplier with the cherokee tie rod end , and the rod end i removed .

I explained to the gentleman that this is a 91 explorer with a 95 cherokee axle and that i had inadvertently asked for the wrong part . he looks frustrated , pulls up the explorer part on the screen and say's ... "na' its not an explorer part" ... without pulling the part out and sizing them up , he makes a judgment call from a tiny little picture on a screen .

I have a friend with a stock 91 explorer , we both looked and agree , this is a stock explorer part .

Today i will go to Napa , not "Adv" .. and ask for a 91 explorer tie rod end ... period .

will report my findings tonight .

Thanks for the feedback blackex

Well whata yuh know ... loL

MOOG Part No. ES2215L

Got in late and decided not to drive the twelve miles away to Napa , and went back to my local Advanced , One mile away ... and asked for a driver side outer tie rod end for a 91 explorer .

Got home , perfect fit .. go figure .

Im an idiot , defined as - (someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way)

Hence the hullabaloo ...

NICE explorer you have there. The only thing I hate about mods on anything is getting replacemeny parts and the tool behind the counter MUST know year make and model?

yea right , you go in and ask for an air freshener and they ask , what year ... loL ...

is that with Air conditioning ? ABS brakes ? ..... you want the extended warranty on that ?

lol ...

;)

glad to see it worked out. truck looks awsome
