Well on Tuesday morning my previous system was stolen, and insurance is not going to cover it... but that is a whole other story.
So now I am in need of a new system and am taking opinions. I want something that is going to hit hard but also have good sound quality.
I was looking at getting 2 12" Kove KEWs and putting them in a custom-made sealed box that will fit square up against the rear seats. As for amps, what is a good 2 channel 700-800 watt amp to power the subs?

For great sound quality and good SPL, I'd check out Image Dynamics' IDQ line, DEI's Competition line, or even some AlumaPro's (great sounding subs, but a little pricier than the others)... I'm sure there are other great sounding drivers, but those I've heard and those I've liked. I've never heard an install with Kove subs I liked, most sounded very sloppy. Plus the guy who owns the company is a jackass, he used to spam rec.audio.car by posting under several sn's talking about how great his speakers were:rolleyes:.

Whatever you get, tell your insurance co. you want it included under the policy. It may effect your premiums, but they should do it.

Okay, I will look into those subs. Actually, my friend has an S10 Xtreme with 4 Koves in it and I thought it sounded really good... Then again I haven't heard too many systems.
So what amp should I get then? I need about 700 watts.

Orion, Audiobahn, and US amps are all excellant choices for an amp. they are way underrated and the sound is clean and powerful.

Why haven't I heard of Kove subs before? :o

kove is a great company. they make the armageddon subs. i'm sure you've heard them before. they hit really hard.

Yes, the Armageddons do play good and loud, but they have awful SQ... I haven't heard they're lower subs, but I've heard a few installs with the Arms (local store sells them, and little else, so they're pretty common), and they did very respectable SPL, but they're sloppy. I'd never buy them though, Kove spams usenet CONSTANTLY, its horrible. In their spam they even go as far as bashing other brands, so I'd hardly call them a great company... Shady, maybe... Check out Google to see what I'm talking about, they post under a few SN's, one was confirmed as having the same IP address as Kovener's email address, if I recall.

that is shady. i've never owned an armageddon sub, but i have installed a few. they are pretty sloppy when you get to the tight bass. i would never buy one just because there are better subs out there for that price. and now that i'm older, i prefer sq to just ungodly spl.

go koves all the way, the armageddons are awesome, but i can seriously see how their short coming would be SQ, but the SPL on those things is off the wall...one of the major audio shops in town is the only supplier around here but their comp. van has 18 armageddon 15s in it if i remember correcty, and man it makes the ground shake...just my opinion though, there are some other companys out there that make really great stuff for cheaper though, the armageddons are a lil pricey

with eighteen 15" subs, it should be able to make the ground shake (even if it's a cheap brand)

LOL, reminds me of a station wagon I saw a few years ago at a competition... Had, I think, 16 cheap ass 15's (something like Pyramids) with as many Profile amps. Loud as hell, made everything shake. Worst sounding stereo I've ever heard :D..

seriously though, this year my original subs got jacked and bein really short on cash i just got a new at the time rockford fosgate he2 10" sub, and im throughly impressed with it i mean for $150 i dont think u can beat it just my opinion again though

the RF he2s are pretty good subs. nice all around sq and spl.

for $150 i would get a 10" Audiobahn Alum subwoofer (800 watts rms, 160oz. magnet, aluminum cone). they have great sound quality and spl. they hit hard and accurately.

i'm not putting down RF, just saying what i would buy with a budget of $150.

Not putting down any of the other reccomedations either, my personal preference for the 150 range would be the IDQ's. Unless you were looking for 2 subs, each in the 150 range, then I'd go to www.mmxpress.com and get the DEI Comp 10's I have, they have them on special for 250 a pair, WONDERFUL subs, IMO some of the best out there, regardless of price. Check out that site anyhow, I think they have the Audiobahn gear, but I'm sure they have ID and RF.

PS-Not bashing any other opinions, I only reccommend what I've heard, and I've never heard the Audiobahn, and the RF HE2s I've heard was in a junk box and in the showroom, so I really can't form a good opinion on them.

Thanks for all of the input guys. Does anyone have any opinions on the Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1D? Or the Eclipse 88120DVC? Remember, I am looking for a sub with a good combination of both SQ and SPL.

Looks like I am going to go with an Orion or Audiobahn amp, just need to decide on the two twelves!

Well I've spent the last couple hours researching the Eclipse 88120DVC, and I'm sold on them. Not only do they look amazing, but they have a great combo of SQ and SPL. Can anyone else tell me differently?
They are rated at 500 watts RMS but apparently can take a lot more, and need more to reach their potential. I am looking at an Orion HCCA 275G4, it's 1200 watts, or the Orion Xtreme 1400, it's 1400 watts... Does anyone have any experience with either of these amps?

So my system setup will be one of these two:

A) Two Eclipse 88120DVCs, each getting 600 watts from the Orion HCCA 275G4

B) Two Eclipse 88120DVCs, each getting 700 watts from the Orion Xtreme 1400.

Now, I never did understand impedance. The subs each have two voice coils at 4 ohms each, and the HCCA does 600 watts x 2 at .5 ohms, whereas the Xtreme does 700 watts x 2 at 2 ohms. Are both of these systems possible to wire to get the correct impedance or will one of my choices not work?

Thanks a lot.

nice choices

i've had Orion HCCA amps. they are amazing. the 275G4 will work better with your setup. you will wire teh voice coils in parallel to give each subwoofer a 2 ohm impedance. them wire the subs bridged in parallel to create a 1 ohm mono load. that'll give you the 1200 X 1 @1ohm mono (but orion amps are underrated at 12 volts, so it'll still put out more power). it's a great amp.

the eclipse subs are great too. i never owned one, but my friend always has eclipse in his cars.

sounds like you picked out an awesome setup.

:bounce:

Great! I have also read that those HCCAs draw 180 amps... So I need a new alternator, right? I had planned on rewiring the electrical supplies for the amp to a bigger gauge and my alternator is on it's way out anyway, so I will get a 200 amp alternator from http://www.mralternator.com/. When I get it all bought, wiring redone, box built, and installed I will be sure to post pics and let everybody know how it turned out. I am excited! Oh, I'll be getting a decent alarm system and a VA policy on my auto insurance too, just in case someone wants to try to steal my system again.
