Ok at 123k im getting the dreaded flare, slam etc. Trans fluid/filter been changed every 10k. Im fairly certain its the servo bores. Everyone tells me Ive gotten 40k more then I should have??

My question is a refurb trans from ford is $2100 with me doing the R & R
havent been to a trans shop to get a quote.

Is there any benefit to getting one from a wrecked one? Will the computers control all years ? Which years will fit?
Was the Servo issue fixed on newer models?

Probably wont do the servo bore fix by itself as im not planning on keeping the X forever but I cant affod a car payment and the X is only really worth $4k at most...

Im screwed either way
Looking for answers from anyone whos done this swap/replaced theirs

thanks,
Doug

It is more likely to be the solenoid pack. Grab one of the new revision units, 9L2Z-7G391-A and see if that fixes it. Do not bother with a used solenoid pack, unless you can get it cheap and are willing to use it only for troubleshooting...they are prone to failure.

Ive got no codes or flashing O/D light..still sound like a solenoid issue?

Codes or not it sounds like the solenoid pack, the codes just help narrow things down.

thank you JoshMcMadMac-

any place to look for these solenoid pacs besides dealer?

eBay? Rock Auto, etc?

Any detailed instructions? I figured if Ive done the tranny fluid, this cant be that difficult, just a ,messy endeavor.

They are ~$270 shipped from Tasca, which guarantees they will be brand new. Keep an eye on eBay, you can occasionally find them for less on there.

For replacement, there is a 10mm bolt for the connector that is a little tough to get to. You definitely want that completely disconnected prior to dropping the pan. It is on the driver side of the transmission, facing up, above the front left side of the transmission pan. There are 14 (I think) 8mm bolts on the pan, and the gasket is reusable. If you are careful you can remove most of the bolts, hold the pan up, remove the last few bolts, and carefully lower the pan so it sits on the exhaust and the crossmember. Then turn the pan 90° and lower out from there, being careful not to spill it. Then you can get a more precise idea of how much fluid to replace.

The solenoid pack is held in by 8 T30 torx bolts. 7 are long, and easy to see. The eighth is along the edge of the pack, along where the pan sits. Then just easily rock the pack loose; there is an o-ring fitting that goes up through the case where you disconnected the connector.

As long as you are this far into it, it is two more 8mm bolts to swap the filter...I would recommend doing that.
