2002 Ford Explorer
Until now we have a stock 2002 Limited 4.6 Explorer. I am on transmition #4 . Towing is not working out well. Daily driving eats up these trans. So, where do I find the information needed to get the strongest most reliable trans for my 02?

I will provide an example using my life long love the 1969 Mercury Cougar. I own, build, repair and wife says am cheating on her with my Cougars. Unfortunantly the knowledge in that area has little crossover into the 2002 era but here is my example.

If a 69 cougar owner posted to the Cougar board they wanted to tow a trailer with their cat to the weekend races with tools and parts aand wanted to know what automatic trans would work best I would tell them the Ford C6 with the small block bellhousing (they are a one piece trans) and a 2500 stall converter for racing. When towing shift manualy not letting the stall kick in. Have the C6 rebuilt with an aftermarket shift kit and a stronger band, gear and valve body upgreade. The trans shop can order them.

So how do I apply that to my explorer or what printer / online reference do I use to identify my current trans then my options for upgrades. Either ford or aftermarket.
Thank you for any help.

Transmission #4 ?! I'm at 130k miles and still on the original tranny. What the hell are you towing?
