drothgeb - Mine is also a 97 4.0 SOHC.

Mine has been doing it for about a year or so when rev'ed to 2600-2900 RPM and only this winter has it gotten noticeable on a cold startup.

First confirm failure

I refuse to purchase expensive parts and tools until I confirm the parts have failed and I need the tools. There are numerous reasons for a SOHC engine to suddenly stop running. Failed CKP sensor, failed fuel pump, failed CMP sensor, failed coil pack are a few examples. Mine was left abandoned on the interstate by the previous owner and only needed a new CMP sensor to get running again.

If you don't have 4 wheel drive you have no balance shaft and don't need it's associated parts included in a complete timing chain kit. If you don't plan to pull the engine and replace the rear cassette then you don't need the rear cassette included in the kit. Don't forget that if you only have to replace the lower front tensioner and guide you'll still need front crankshaft seal, front timing cover gasket and anything else you find wrong (leaking water pump, etc.) while getting to the timing cover. All of those things quickly increase the cost and effort.

I encourage you to determine what needs replacement before assuming anything and ordering parts and tools.

Is there any way to detect which of my guides are worn and making the noise without pulling the block or opening up the front?

Rattle isolation

Is there any way to detect which of my guides are worn and making the noise without pulling the block or opening up the front?

Is the rattle in the upper right rear, upper left front or lower center front? It's fairly easy to tell if there is rattle at upper right rear. It's more difficult to distinguish the upper left front from the lower left front. I bought a mechanic's stethoscope and still can't tell. Actually, if the upper left is rattling then the lower front tensioner and guide should be replaced anyway when the timing cover is removed to replace the upper cassette.
