Hi all,

Im new to this forum as Ive just bought my 1st Explorer, a 1997 4.0 V6 in black. Very sweet ride I mustr say.

I have 1 or 2 problems that I wouldnt mind your feedback on.

I have a rattly engine which im told is loose timing chains and I have a grinding O/S front wheel which im told is probably the drive shaft.

Anyone know how complex a job it is to repair these 2 issues and what sort of price I can expect to pay.

Cheers guys

Matt

Hi and welcome.

The timing chain rattle may be solved by fitting the OOM12 kit. (about £70) do a search for how to fit it. If the chains require replacement then the engine has to come out and special tools are required to time the camshafts.

The grinding wheel may be the wheel bearing which is all part of the hub assembly and runs about £250 for the part. Or it could be the outer cv joint which is cheaper. Check for play in the wheel first. If play then bearing needs replacing.

u got shares in these :p :D

Ive been told by my mechanic that the bearing is now fine and the problem was with the drive shaft but we are still puzzled by the timing chain problem.

Aparently its more than likely the tensioners but was wondering if anyone knows what sort of price ill be looking at to get the tensioners fixed/replaced?

Cheers

I have just had it confirmed that my timing chain is causing a rattle, anyone know who could fix it for me in South Wales, the Ford garage don't even want to go near it!
