I own a '99 Explorer XLT with 225k. Thanks to this site and a little TLC, she is still in great shape.

I can't find any information on the recommended life of the timing chains in the 4.0 SOHC. When should these chains be replaced?

Thanks in advance...

Welcome to the site!

Timing chains can last 300k+ miles sometimes. Just listen for ticks. If you dont have any, dont worry about it.

Welcome to this forum! I've moved your thread to the stock 95-01 section. There isn't much to do as far as preventative maintenance on a chain. Sometimes these chains stretch a little over time, and then they start to rattle. They might even look fine when they are removed, but they could be slightly warped. Run your oil at the proper level, and keep the engine temperature at the normal level.
