Timing chain rattle questions

I joined this site because from what I have read so far you guys are pretty knowledgeable. I am working on my neighbors 01 explorer 4.0 SOHC motor for him due to the rattle they seem to make in the mid rpm range.

So I have to new parts and everything but I cant seem to figure out how to time the cams. The directions that I have are so complicated and I can not figure it out.

I am getting really frustrated and really starting to give up. Please help me.

You need a special tool to time the cams. The tool should have been used while you were doing the job to hold the cams in time.
