Is it worth the fix at this point, i have a 98 4.0 sohc with 215k miles. Should i just ride it till it dies and get another truck, or would it be worth the money getting it fixed?

Does it just rattle at start up or all the time?

JMO - it's not worth it. minimum cost for parts is around $700 if you do the labor (the engine or trans need to come out). Dealership charge around $2,200 to do it. on a '98 SOHC with 215k, i'd say you've gotten your money out of it so far. i'd just drive it till it dies. my '01 XLT made noise since purchased (showing 129k) and died at 175k 2 yrs later... RIP. we got $450 from salvage and kept 4 good tires and wheels and a good battery plus other usable bits and pieces (it helps to have 3 others to use the parts on). I figure the salvage value and parts were worth about $1500 to me, which is about what the truck was worth if it was still running.

IMO it just depends on how long you are planning on keep it. I did the chains and cassettes at 220K miles and it now has 563K and I'm still driving it with no problems. Remember, a new SUV is going to cost you around 30K or more, and a good used one around 10K or more. You decide...

Well ya se i live in VA and it has seen the st. louis arch twice since I've owned it. Not to mention taking it hunting god knows how many times and truthfully she has seen wayyyy better days. But i like 'ole betsy and i wouldn't mind makin her last

only on the start up

From my understanding you still have some time left. You could try to install a pre-oiler for the timing chain. That would prolong the life of the timing chain...

This is a how-to kind of thread for an accusump setup.

Also, what oil are you using?

I use pennzoil in the yellow jug, ( i know it aint fancy) Im trying to avoid major cost but i am willing to shell out at least 800 to try to keep her join but any more and ill just get a new one i think.

If it only rattles at start up then it's probably worthwhile replacing the timing chain tensioners.
