I am at the point of replacing my timing chains and gonna do the a/c compressor at the same time since it's shot. I got a quote from a shop in my area for $2800 and included is water pump and oil pump. I can see the purpose of doing the oil pump but is it necessary to do the water pump? They said it all comes in a kit so you might as well do it while you're in there. I am all about preventative maintenance but don't want to drop a bunch of extra money if I don't have to. I am just curious if both pumps are necessary or if I should just bite the bullet and do it all.

Not a bad price, do it.

Huh???

It's a 2002, 15 years old, and you want to put $2800 into it? Doesn't make much sense!

$2800 for a shop to do the chains may be a little cheap. Are they pulling the engine? Might want to verify how many of these they've done.

I think $2700 is NADA price for a 2003, so you may want to look for another Ex.

The thought of a new (to me) car is great, but financially it is out of the questions. I don't want to risk buying a used car for $3,000 and running into the same problem, or possibly worse. I owe 6 more payments and the thing is paid off and the thought of not having a car payment anymore is glorious. Some may think it's silly to put that kind of money into a "15 year old car" but with putting the money into it it will keep running for however many more years.

It's not silly. A lot of people on this forum have spent a ton of money maintaining their Explorers, it's some kind of sickness. This forum is a kind of Explorer AA.

I'd rather repair a vehicle that looks nice than have a $400/month car payment.

You really need to invest in a back up car. It's my rule. Then start doing repairs on your own vehicle, if so desired.

This is my backup car
