BTT (bump) TTT

If it breaks while driving do you have MAJOR problems? Or just need a new one? How hard to change it?

If it breaks you are screwed. The pistons will beat the valves apart and probably ruin the heads along with the piston heads, tearing up the block with broken parts is possible also. You could get lucky and have the engine die just after it bends a couple valves and not have too much damage.

Timing chains are a ***** to replace. The whole front of the engine has to come off. If you bent valves and whatnot, you have to take the heads off to replace them. If you have the SOHC, you have a chain on the back side of the engine too.

It is very rare to have timing chain problems with the ohv. The chain should last the life of the engine. Now if you have an ohc the life of the chain isn't the problem, its the tensioners and guides.

Thanks

Now can this/should this be replaced NOW to prevent the possibility? I heared that the rear can't be done w/o removing the engine and that the front is the problem one. Any idea's of an independant shops doing it?

Yes, it should be done now if it sounds like something is about to break. As far as I can tell the enigine does have to be removed to replace the rear chain, guides, and tensioners.

Any idea on price?

Does both front and rear need to be done? :) I can live with a noisey motor, but not a dead one!

I got new cassets, tensenior in the rear... took a solid week and set me back about $900. Fixed the noise (to an extent) but other than that, totally unnoticeable.
I think it should be done, but trust me, its not really satisfying :( Ohh, and be sure you get it done at a GOOD dealer.

To they "guarentee" a worry-free next set of ________ miles?

Anyone know if the TSBs are covered until 100k? I've heard mixed results on this and last I heard is was good until 2004, but don't know the mileage.

Mine was not a TSB repair, it was just a 'pay for this fix' repair. I really don't remember them telling me this came with any kind of warranty, except mabey their usual for work done at the dealership.
