Does anybody know what millage, and how much a timing chain shoule be replaced at and the cost on a 4.0 SOHC. ive had mine for about 3 months, and its a 97, i really dont know what the previous owners did to it, but the ford dealer said it was sound. but i want to replace it considering it is a low tolerance motor, i dont want it to break on me. It has about 128,000 on the clock.

A timing chain is not a part of regular maintenance. Replace only if its a problem.

Timing chains usually won't break... they will usually stretch over time.. When it stretches too much, then the chain might make some noise.. or your engine might not run so smoothly due to timing being slightly off. There is a point where it might be a good idea to change the timing chain.. Someone from the forum will hopefully jump in to tell us at what mileage it would be recommended to change the timing chain. It's a pain in the A$$ though.

if you are hearing a swishing sound from your motor then it is time for a change, and yes it is a pain.there is no set interval in which to change it as with a belt, but as mentioned before it may stretch

Do have to worry about a timeing chain in the 5.0 engine?
