2002 ranger
i have a 2002 ford ranger 4x4 with a 4.0l sohc v6 that i'm working on. owner said it was making noise (rattling) for two months, and then i died. did compression check. ds bank were all 150 ps bank were all 50. removed valve cover on ps and plastis chain guide parts everywhere chain had 1in. of slop in either direction. my question, is this engine a contact motor, are the valves all bent or is the lack of compression caused by tensioner, guide, jumped a tooth?

Welcome to the forum! I do not have an answer for you, but I'm absolutely certain that someone here will be able to tell you exactly what you need to know!

welcome

the 4.0L SOHC IS an interference motor meaning that yes the pistons can contact the valves. Just because it doesn't start doesn't mean that there was a collision, it could be off just enough in timing to prevent a start up. My explorer (4.0L SOHC) has the rattle and I plan on replacing the entire timing components this spring when it warms up. I would check the valves to see if they are infact ruined first

thank you, i will check the valves.

no problem. take some pictures and post them if you can so it will help the next person with this problem. Never know it may become a sticky and you can get a free elite membership for a while.
