Tin Roof Rain noise.

I had hail damage to my X and the Paint less dent repairman had the headliner down to repair the dents.

We discussed the possible fix and I relayed to him what was discussed on this forum. We decided to use the foam to fill the void between the roof and cross member to deaden the drum effect.

The foam was bought at Lowes, The Dynamat was bought at a custom car audio install shop.

Hope this helps.

I, too, would like to know that there is a fix before I give up my spare time to take it to the dealer. The problem is known, proven, repeatable, etc. Having the dealer confirm it and do nothing is just a waste of time for everyone involved.
+1:thumbsup:

I checked and verified that nothing has been released yet. RandyH2, you’re right that escalating the individual concerns allows for the scope of an issue to be clearer. It’s better to resolve individual concerns on a one on one basis, but if there are any answers that would help everyone on the forum, I would post that here.

You'd imagine they want to be aware of it before starting MY2012 production and improve on it and whatever the improvement they can pass it on to the older models in a TSB.

It's not a defect but sure is a blemish in ride quality... quality in general.

when i saw the video i didnt even think of tapping on that area and when i did i was surprised on the sound that resonated from it. should be interesting when i drive it in rain first time.

And also if they can announce a final fix for the Apillar farting, then i can take the car to my dealer and report it and have them fix it.

I too am curious what ford's response to this will be. I am in the market for a 2012 and would hope they can fix this before they start making the 2012s.

Honestly this should have been a mid year fix. My Explorer was built on May 14th and it has the problem too. A little sound deadening spray material applied at the factory would have been a whole lot easier that having the dealer disassemble the roof lining on thousands of Explorers.

No big deal, I think maybe the have "only" built about ~70,000 MY2011 Explorers since launch:D

i've owned my ex since feb but don't drive it that much. So it wasn't until recently that i drove in rain and holy cow batman, what a disaster this roof is..... PLEASE let there be a TSB soon!!! would love to get a-pillar and rain noise problems fixed at 1 time.....

Cory,

I have talked to another customer service rep in your department several weeks ago and was told to go see my dealer. The dealer says there is nothing he can do until a TSB is issued from Ford. I think the ball is in Ford's court now since many people seem to have identified the issue and notified customer service. Is there any official word coming from Ford in the near term to respond to all of us who have already notified customer service? After all, this is not a unique problem with just a few Explorers. If you tap the roofs of the Explorers setting on the dealer's lot you will hear the same steel drum sound.

I guess we really don't have a choice but to file it individually to Cory. I think every one that read this post is somewhat disappointed at the rain noise. Should we should keep at list here to who have submitted to Cory so that we know we get enough volumes?

Same exp as Striker dealer can't do anything until TSB for guidance

Maybe post who has a case number. Cory what would you suggest would be the best approach for you to help log and get the group help

I’ve been notified that there is something in the works, but no official release yet.

donm527, please let me know if you’d like help with taking it to the dealer.

janskim, like G37RRaiders said, the best way is to PM me (for those who haven't already) the VIN, approximate mileage, and dealer name so I can escalate your concern. It’s also helpful to include a description of the issue you’re experiencing so I can forward it as well.

I haven't contacted my dealer or you. Should I still escalate this? I was being patient as it hasn't affected me much yet.

I truly am lucky so far. I have driven in rain many times of varied levels. Only once did I get the noise badly. My luck must have been a combo of speed/wind/raindrop size/etc so far.

I haven’t seen an official release yet and it’s definitely up to you on whether you’d like to be called about the issue. I want to make sure you are aware of your options.

I have yet to go to my dealer and report the A-pillar issue or the rain noise issue either. I do have the A-pillar farting noise and I have experienced the rain noise today... geez, it's like rain hitting a tin roof.

but I am waiting to hear there are bonafide TSBs on both before bringing it in to have it worked on.

I mean, what's the point if there is no TSB on either... I am not going to let them use my car as a guinnea pig and waste a day off to do it either.

They're minor annoyances for now so livable... like living with the one or two quirks with MFT. the X is great besides those few issues. but it will get annoying if it goes on for a long time without a resolution put in place.

Exactly, no point in letting a dealer mess with it until there is a repair procedure.

I hope Ford is taking this seriously.

I would think that it will effect the sales of the 2012's if they do not do anything to fix the 2011's.

I can see them now, putting a robot :D in place to apply something under the roof to quiet the excessive drum noise.

Another one to work on the A=Pillar.

Another one to apply a sticker that says SYNC is not compatible with any Apple products.
