Tin Roof Rain noise.

...Cory, you do good work, but just walking out an tapping on the roof of any 2012 and you can answer this question.
I appreciate your kind words, Chicago Lion; I’m here to help out. I can arrange a call from the Customer Service Manager in your area. I already have your VIN so you’d only need to PM your contact information, dealer name/state, and mileage.

I agree with boss377 i would like not to have that noise but its no biggie will ford have a fix i think they will...
NEWPORTNJ,

It’s great that you love your Explorer. Like I said, drop me a line via PM if you’d like a call for further help. I have your VIN from tracking so please be sure to include the above details. :)

My 2011 Explorer with moonroof has the same tin sound as mentioned in these threads. It is worse when driving under trees. So the best thing to do is to complain to the Regional Service Mgr? Do i just ask my dealer for the name and phone number. Its going to be a long winter here in Oregon if we don't get a fix for this asap.

I'm glad to see that this thread is staying active. I think there are several of us that are waiting for someone to say that Ford actually performed a fix on their EX and it worked.
Going to my dealer and complaining would be a waste of time since I would have to make it happen before they would do anything. Also, it is a design error, not a mechanical failure.
I have a feeling that Ford is just putting all of us off, hoping the issue will go away. If they didn't think it was important enough to eliminate on the 2012, they aren't going to take us 2011s very seriously.

After my research, I found that engineering is aware of this issue and is looking into a repair but there’s not one at the moment. Until that happens, please continue to PM me your VIN, approximate mileage, and dealer name (if you haven’t already done so). Thank you for your understanding.

Cory

HI Cory,

We are going on 5 months since this post- any update from the folks in engineering?

Thanks,
Randy

So, I took my Ex in for a couple of items and had them check for the rain noise issue. The report from the dealer came back that my Ex sounded like the one they have on the lot. Well, no %$##^.

I had to laugh when I saw this! My Ex has a vibration issue that the service manager felt but he dismissed it by saying that others on the lot had the vibration and that he wouldn't know where to start trying to fix it. Then I got a call from the REgional Ford Rep who said my Ex is normal, no problems. I guess if they all have a problem it isn't really a problem!

Hey guys,

There hasn’t been an official release on this yet. In case you didn’t see my other post, I can help by forwarding this to the Customer Service Manager for your region. For me to do that, please send a PM with your contact information, VIN, dealer name/state, and mileage.

I agree, Who has had theirs fixed by a Ford dealer? I also don't understand why they built the 2012's and did not fix the issue with rain.
I love my X and waiting on a software/hardware fix for the MFT. I have V2.11 and have noticed a lot of Nav errors which requires me to re-install SD card which works most of the time. Did not do this with V2.8. When installing the card have also had screen go black which appears to be a sign of when it starts a reboot of the system. This has occured about the time I was going to shut the vehicle off. When this happened, have waited until screen comes back up before shutting the vehicle off.

Just a reminder to everyone, if you "escalate" this with Cory it means your name gets added to the list. Once the list gets long enough something happens...

Plus, it keeps Cory busy. ;)

batman89,

Have you sent this information to Rebecca in the In-Vehicle Technology team (FordIVTteam)? I recommend sending her a PM with the details so she can look into it.

Thanks again for your recommendation, RandyH2. :D I love to stay busy!

You guys still holding your breath for a TSB?

Yes. And am turning blue. Would be nice to get something from FORD like a date we can get this fixed since it is a known problem.

The roblem is, 8 months isnt enough time to come up witha fix and implement it. Yes, 100% sarcasm. REDICULOUS!!!

In my case I would classify it as a minor annoyance rather than a problem. I've gone through plenty of rain and only once did I hear that sound everyone refers to and even then it wasn't that bad.

+1 to Cory!

Ford is working on a fix that prevents rainfall in the US, effectively eliminating the problem. I would still advise staying away from drive thru car washes tho, they're likely to trigger a PTSD response.

Possible fix for rain noise

I had to much background wind noise while talking through the phone in my Ex. On another web page I saw where people were putting insulation or sound deading material behind the mic in the headliner - just pull down and it comes off and then push it back in. For those that have a moon roof open it all the way back. There is a large opening between the top of the car and the headliner as you look toward the windshield. I bought the yellow fiberglass insulation at Home Depot. They sell small bags of it that is 16" wide 3/4" thick and 48" long made by Frost King. I cut the insulation into strips of about 4" x 8" and pushed them thru the opening in the front of the moonroof. I then used a wood dowl to push the insulation forward toward the windshield and above and around the headliner mic. I did a before and after test by calling my answering machine from a dead stop and then at 70+ mph on the freeway - the improvement was like night & day I would call it 100% better. We have not had a lot of heavy rain yet in Northern Ca but I have not noticed any rain noise. I only used about half the bag so if I notice rain noise later I will put in more isulation as I did not pack it full. I have also posted threads under A pillar and glove box rattles. My Ex is now 100% quite and I now love it. No longer frustrated by dealer run arounds since I fixed myself. Happy New Year from a now happy owner of my 2012 Ex limited
