Tire caught on fire - still good?

Basically I let my tire come into contact with a propane torch for about ten seconds, the inner sidewall burned about the size of a quarter, not very deep, no cords showing...think it's still good? Any test I can use? It's a Michelin LTX M/S tire, would hate to throw it out.

Ummm I'd say throw it away. I'm not a tire expert though

anything that compromises the structural integrity of the tire would be a good reason to toss it.

poke it with awl / screw driver to get an idea of the rubber "feel". Check it against another "good" part of the tire and go from there. Although it is probably "unwise", in these days of plugs and such still running down the highway, it is possibly still ok... tires can get pretty hot in their "normal routine". IF you are using the ride / tires for "around the city driving", you might get some more life out of it.

10 secs is a long time to torch a tire. I would put the spare on it and not use that tire again.

Do you have a picture? Would give us a better idea of the damage and location does matter.

I would toss it. Is the cost of a replacement tire worth what would happen if the Michelin blows out at the wrong time?

well, it's not like explorers have a history of rolling over due to tire failure... oh wait, they do. toss the tire.
