Alright I am in sort of a bind. Initially I was going to TT/Shackle my 1999 XLT 4wd however now I am thinking it may not be the right spot for the money. I am getting my tax return back and debating what to do with it. I have about $1000 on a CC and I owe about $800 on my Dell account still... I was thinking practical and was going to put the money towards paying one off or a little of each. Safe bet to expect for my return is probobly $800 or so but now I don't know what to do with it.

I was thinking hey I could just get some BFG A/T's at stock size, have some decent tires and not have to worry about it, then on the other hand I was thinking about getting SOMEwhat larger than stock and MAYBE getting shackles down the road. I am very tight with money now however my BFG Long Trails have only about 20,000 left on them and I drive ALOT... not to mention they suck, I don't know how much A/T's are going to help me with minor off road and on road snow and crap but let me tell you the long trails seem pretty useless unless I am expecting too much of the X. I know some have shoved 30-32's on stock height but I really don't feel like cramming something in, but later down the road if I did indeed have a spare $100 bucks lying around I could get shackles and do my lift or maybe just say screw the lift and bump up two sizes to 30/9.5/15s and make them A/T's.

Cosmetic mods for my truck currently include professionally smoked tails, a full billet grill with bumper insert and 20% tint... the Explorer is a 99 XLT in Charcole, looks pretty nice. I just wish I knew the route to take because this is a once a year thing and I know I will need tires within the next year anyways and if I say screw the lift and 32's I will still spare myself some gas mileage. By the looks of it on tirerack it is about $105 per tire for 235/75/15's which isn't bad but the 30/9.5/15s are $107. How much will going from BFG long trails to A/T's one or two sizes bigger on stock lift help... should I bother spending the money or just kill my tires I have now and put the tax return somewhere else?

Its all a matter of opinion, but I would run the tires you've got now and take care of some of the debt. Then when you need tires, get good AT's in 30x9.50 or 31x10.50. If you go with 31's you can run them stock, then down the road if you do a 2" lift they'll still look fine.

Will the 31's still be alright even on stock lift? or are they going to hinder me even more if I got into mud because there is not much clearance because of stock lift and the bigger tire. I heard mud just gets all bound up and it makes the snow and mud capability worse.

I don't know first hand (I've got first gen explorers), but there are people here who run 31's stock with no problems. I was running 30's on mine before the lift and they worked just fine.

I think I am going to get some 31x10.5x15 Rugged Trails, there cheaper and they look pretty sweet so unless someone tells me there pretty useless tires I think I will just go with that.

If you hate long trials, you're probably not going to like rugged trials either. If you want an aggressive AT I'd go ahead and get BFG AT KO's. They're one of the best tires out there. Somewhere was running a sale on them a while back, maybe www.tires.com or the tire rack, but 31x10.50x15's were $105 with free shipping. Might be worth looking in to.
