Well i just experenced my first flat tire. It was stable but getting the tire from the bottom was a B**** expecally at 1 in the morning on a VERRRRY dark road. I was wondering if i can put my spare on the roof with just a stock roof rack and still be legal???? I live in PA and could not find any laws stating that i could not have it on the roof but i rather be safe than sorry. What would be the best way to mount it???

Thanks, Jon

with the stock roof rack i doubt youll be able to unless you get a bucnh of tie downs. the roof racks with the tires on em have a mount for the tire that holds it by the hub...at least from te ones ive seen. Trust me, i put luggage on my roof and used about 10 tie downs and roped it and everything and at 70 mph on te highway it flew off, luckily no one was behind me, could you imagine the accident that would have made. Also your fuel milage may dip too, as the extra drag from the tire will do this. If the toter packs you can mount on your roof, and they are aero dynamic make you lose 2 mpg what would a tire do. So basically unless you get somethin to firmly hold that tire down, i wouldnt do it. do what i do, trow it in the trunck and tie it down with two short bungees. :)

Bought this on eBay, its a Jeep tire carrier.

i had mine on the roof straped down with 4 ratchet straps before i got the safari basket....just had to keep an eye on it and every so often re-tighten the straps, so it can be done

i drove 898 miles and back with a 33 on the roof.. just strap the crap out of it

Thanks for the replys. I still can't get any info on it being illegal so i am just going to strap the hell out of it. Pulling a 31 from under that thing is a b****. I have about 250 pounds of tools back there for school and it is a mono leaf causing the rear to SAG like no other. I am going to build a custom leaf pack using a 4 door leaf pack and hopefully that will raise the rear a little.

Yep I have done that with a stock roof rack and a 33". That was one of the worst decions I have ever done. The truck swayed pretty bad because of the wind resistance and I got horrible gas milage. I was crusing around 75 mph and I really could tell a difference. I will not put the tire back on the roof.
