I know that 32 is industry standard but for instance when I did a chalk test on my CJ7 with 32s The PSI that provided a flat run on the tread was down around 23PSI. Wouldn't the appropriat PSI also really be determined by the # of plys and sidewall construction. For instance Swampers have a super strong sidewall, it's like 6 ply where BFG I think runs 3 ply and I'm sure the no name companies are even less so wouldn't that affect the stance of a tire at different PSI. When I was running 32 in my explorer (when I bought it) after I get on the asphault from my dirt road I noticed the edge lugs on my mud terrains stayed dirty, so I assumed I was running on the center of the tire or basically over inflated. 25 PSI gives me a fairly even wear according to my dirt theory but I haven't actually done a chalk test. Is the chalk test the correct way to judge PSI or is that just a urban mechanics myth?
Jimabena74, Don't take this as a coment against your response it just seems like that 32PSI thing is too broad for all cars and all tires. I may be wrong, I'm not a tire expert nor have I ever worked at a tire shop I'm just looking for opinions and to see if what I'm doing is correct. How are your 31's wearing? In the center? Even?
