Hello, just wondering if I should be using ford's recommend tire presure or the pressure indicated on the side of the tire. These are not the tires that came with the truck.

Also, the pressure on the tire indicates 45psi. Does that sound right?

Thanks in advace!!

i guees it depends on the size of the tire. i have 31x10.5x15's and they call for 50psi, but i run them at about 34 psi. the ride is great, but you will see a little faster wear with less tire pressure. too much psi and the ride will suck. try to find a happy medium, thats what i did.

The higher pressure will give you better gas mileage because there is less rolling resistance. The lower pressure will give you a cushier ride but you'll burn more gas. I try to keep mine just a few pounds lower than the tire manufacturers suggested tire pressure. A compromise.

Go by the tire specs

I have 40psi in 31" MT's....hopefully they'll last alittle longer. It's kinda rough though haha

Later
CP :D

The sidewall spec is max pres with a fully loaded vehical, may not be the best thing to use

45 PSI sounds a little bit high, I run 30x9.50 BFG A/Ts with 35 PSI and it gives a good ride with fair gas mileage.

I have run every tire that I have ever owned at 32-35psi, and never had one wear unevenly.

please don't go by the what the tire says.. Either look on your drivers door sticker or do the old chalk method.

I keep mine at around 35 psi no matter what tires I run. That is unless I plan to do some major highway driving (like a trip down south) then I would bring it up to 40 psi for that extra mpg. If you're still unsure, I'd just keep it around 32-35 psi and be on the safe side.

Why would you not want to follow the tires's recommended pressure and go by a sticker that was wrong in the first place?? (remember the Wilderness AT's..)

32-35 PSI

1) never follow Ford specs ;)
2) never follow the max rating on the tire.

Because that is the tire's MAXIMUM pressure at MAXIMUM load capacity. Example- a tire is rated to carry 2500lbs. With four of them inflated to max pressure, that would give you 10,000lb. load capacity. Your Explorer could never weigh 10,000lbs. no matter what you stuffed in it. There is no need to ever run max listed inflation on an explorer with any tire unless you like beating yourself up with a poor ride.

In short- the number on the sidewall is for max load only and NOT for everyday driving.

inflating to max labeled pressure:
poor ride
poor wear
poor handling
instability
road noise
etc.

need I say more?

I have been running 31psi front and 33 rear in my Sport. I found that by running higher pressure in the back it dialed out the "push" I was getting.
