Did Ford raise or lower the recommended tire pressure during the defective Firestone tire problems?

I know the blowouts were the result of defective tires and not from people running them under inflated but just wondering.

I've been going by the door jam sticker.

They raised it. If I remember correctly Ford originally spec'd 26 lbs, which was a bit on the low side to begin with. Combine that with the average lazy owner who didn't check pressures and many were actually driving around with about 18-20 lbs in their tires. Factor in aggressive driving, under-inflation, and some faulty Firestone tires to achieve rollover goodness. Then when the media gets involved ....

On my wife's `98 2WD Sport I received a replacement decal from Ford that changed recommended tire pressure to 30 lbs. The truck itself weighs about 3600 lbs and I run her tires at 32 lbs, which rides decent and wears evenly.

On my `99 XLT V8 AWD I usually run 35 lbs. The truck weighs about 4200 lbs and 35 seems to be enough to wear evenly without riding too rough. If you're driving cross-country, carrying a heavy load, a car full of people, or towing you should bump your normal pressure up a bit accordingly. This is from my personal experience, others here may have different and/or better recommendations.

Did Ford raise or lower the recommended tire pressure during the defective Goodyear tire problems?

They were Firestone tires not Goodyear tires.

Ford raised the advice-pressure.
The TRA used before the Ford Explorer/Firestone affaire, a equation for reduced loads that came to lower pressures and so warmer and more stressed tires. After it the TRA upgraded it to the European ETRTO equation.
This is the one Europe has been using since the beginning of the Radial tire.
You could read next article about a new suggestion for calculating it , and comparison with the Power- Equation with the diferent powers in Europe and
America.

If the judges knew about this , to my opinion wrong equation, the outcome of the law-suts would be a little diferent.
Next to this article is the calculateload1 excell-spreadheet I made to play with the powers and see what diferences they give.
