'93 Explorer Sport 2d 4wd
Please give me some advice on replacing the tires on my '93 Sport (2d, 4wd). I have about 140K miles on it and it's driven mainly by my college aged son, on road. I'm looking for a smoother ride. It shakes badly now at 55 mph+ (may be alignment or front end problem?). I doubt the vehicle will last as long as the next set of tires, so I'm not looking to put a lot of money in them.

The door sticker calls for P235/75R15's. The owner's manual say not to replace them with "high performance" or larger size tires, and not to use "All Season" tires (though "All Terrain" are acceptable). The guy at the local tire shop -- who I have some confidence in -- says the "All Terrain" tires won't give me the ride I'm looking for.

What do you recommend?

In general, an AT will give a rough ride. As well any tire LABELED, "LT"..Stay away from CONTI's, I'm running them on my F-150, ride rough as hell. Running Michelins on my Suzuki, they have a good ride, running big procomp's on my Ex, terrible ride.

Use the search feature for this site.

Also, get a Wrangler RTS or equivalent tire. They are good all season, all-terrain tire. The ride is nice. If yuo want something more aggressive go with the Wrangler AT/S. I have those. it is a firmer ride, but better traction.

I think you would be happiest with the Wrangler RT/S though. Best of both worlds, and they last long.

Out of all the explorers I have ridden in, the most comfortable ones where the ones that had the OE Firestones on them.

I have a set of BFG A/T's on my Bronco, and a set of BFG L/T's (Long Trails) on my Cherokee. The L/T is a quiet and smooth riding tire, and I would recommend it for highway driving.
