My manual tranny has just about bit the dust. It grinds going into every gear, and as for reverse.........it's just not there. When the time comes to replace it, I want to go with an automatic transmission, but I dont know what trannys, if any are compatible with my transfercase. This would be an easy task for me only if I knew what I needed to do to keep my 4wd.

I have access to a C4, C6, and even an AOD. Any thoughts on what I should do?

An auto tranny swap is the topic of another thread recently. GeneralX is starting to brainstorm swapping his faulty A4LD. From what I understand you need the c5 bellhousing. An AOD will be of no help. I do believe you could use a c4 with a c5 bellhousing. This is only what I remember from another thread, that I will try and link you to. With any of the C transmissions you will lose OD.

Thanks for the link Mbrooks420,

I think I'm going to find a C5 to use in the absence of my 5spd. Once beefed up, hopefully it work well behind a 5.0L. And from what I understand, my stock tcase will work behind the C5.

I was reading about a V8 swap for a Ford Ranger, and the website says that you must use an F-150 bellhousing and converter behind a V8. It also states that if you have a 4WD and a C5 then you will need to change the bell housing, torque converter, and valve body. Otherwise you could swap a C5 tailshaft housing and output shaft onto a C4.
