Hi guys , I did a little search here but didn't find an answer , my question is I have a 99 Ex auto 4.0 2x4 , not sure what tranny I have but its auto , it has 255,000 and I'm guessing that the tranny fluid is never been change , so what are the pros and cons on changing the tranny fluid ? and what needs to be change ? is it something I can do ? I'm very handy but I have never worked on domestics cars , any thoughts will be very appreciated !

Thank you !

The 5R55E transmissions were used in the V6 Explorers. Not the strongest transmission Ford ever built. With that many miles, the most I'd do is a trans pan drop, pan & magnet clean and install a new high-quality trans filter. You'll need about 4.5-5 quarts of Mercon V ATF to refill it. On a 2WD the job is easy enough to do for a DIY're (other than being very messy).
