Over my spring break I changed my Trans filter and fluid. It was NOT hard however I ran into a slight problem. The pan looked like it was holding about 6 quarts so I put in 5 and then checked the level. That was when I realized I had a problem. I had already over filled the trans! Now that means that only about 4 of the 10 quarts came out. AND that I am now running an over filled tranny.
IS this THAT bad? What can I do to remidy the problem?
Thanks in advance,

Nick,
You can cause problems by overfilling the tranny. The easiest thing to do, short of having to drain it again, is to stick a small diameter hose in the tranny fill line and siphon some of it out. It is not the easiest job in the world, but it beats dropping the pan again.

Concerning you not getting all the fluid out at first when you drained it, there is still a good amount left in the radiator and the torque convertor that does not readily drain. The usual way of doing it completely is to know the capacity of the tranny and rest of the assembly, disconnect the return line on the radiator leading back to the tranny, and allow it to drain while installing fresh fluid. It is not the easiest job in the world but it will work. A lot of the Jiffy Lube places will do this for you but I would not even trust them to change my oil.

I used to be schizophrenic, but we're OK now...No we aren't...Yes we are... shut up.

Overfilling is not a good thing. I seem to remember reading somewhere that if you overfill, you run the risk of foaming your tranny fluid. Once this happens, temperatures rise, you won't shift and it becomes a ***** to get out all the old, foamed fluid, not to mention that tranny will probably overflow and get fluid everywhere....

A similar situation happened to me... I drained some of it by removing the transmission oil tube from the radiator and *briefly* running the engine to pump some of the excess out. I can't remember now if it was the upper or lower tube... sorry.
