Anyone out there have experience with rebuilding their Explorer's engine? I am just curious, I fear mine is on it's last leg (175K miles, no power, oil leaks, etc). My options are: rebuild the engine, possibly adding a few performance goodies; buy a rebuilt long-block engine and not afford any performance goodies, or buy a complete engine out of a wreck, and take my chances. Also, keep in mind: while I may be a nice shadetree mechanic, I am far from able to do any of these procedures, so even if I buy a complete engine out of a wreck, I will still have to pay some grease-monkey to put it in. So, if anyone has any previous experience or advice of any kind, it will be welcomed.

I had my engine replaced with the engine out of a wrecked Ford Ranger. If I had it to do over again, I would have put in a V8. It will cost you more money, but think about where you want to be in a year or two. Don't just do it because it is cheap if it is not what you are going to be happy with. Sorry if I sound negative, I do love my Explorer, but I dream of a v8. I would suggest that you a least get a built v6. I am happy with my stock v6, I just wish it had a little bit more power.

If everybody is different, how can anyone be normal?
